What is a Blowout Preventer (BOP)?

A Blowout Preventer is a critical safety device installed at the wellhead to control or stop the uncontrolled flow of formation fluids during drilling operations. Acting as a final barrier between the reservoir and the surface, BOPs protect both rig personnel and the environment from hazardous blowouts.

BOP stacks are composed of robust components—valves, rams, bonnets—installed above the casing head to seal, control, and monitor well pressure. Depending on the application, they vary in size, configuration, and pressure rating.
